Let’s jump into this home addition and see what our team completed.
What makes good design? While the answer is often subjective, it’s usually much easier to agree on what makes bad design. Wasted space, dark narrow corridors, and awkward room layouts are almost universally disliked, and this home had all three.
Nestled in the oak‑studded foothills of El Dorado Hills, just 30 minutes east of Sacramento, you can understand what the original architect of this ranch‑style home was attempting. The garage, kitchen, and dining areas flowed into a breakfast nook and great room before a bedroom hall split the home in two. From there, the hall branched perpendicularly: the primary suite to the left, three bedrooms and a bath to the right. But instead of connecting these wings, the architect carved out a private enclosed courtyard between them, a gesture meant to offer easy access to the backyard and pool deck.
Understandable? Yes. Successful? Not quite.

Before the Home Addition (awkward use of space via the open courtyard)
Poor access left the courtyard virtually unused, and the surrounding rooms and hallways still felt dark, cramped, and disconnected.
After a thorough review of the as‑built conditions and structural engineering, our team at Usher Building and Design set out to reclaim this awkward pocket of outdoor space and integrate it into the home the way it always should have been, through a very calculated home addition.
Today, that once‑forgotten courtyard is the heart of a dramatically improved floor plan.
What Exactly Did We Do?

After the Home Addition (Relocated laundry room, new spacious bathroom and updated secondary bedrooms)
A well‑appointed laundry room, relocated from the garage on the opposite side of the home, now sits conveniently between the primary suite and the secondary bedrooms. The hall bath serving those bedrooms was expanded as well, transforming a narrow, uninspired space into a polished room worthy of beginning and ending your day.
And the showstopper: the remainder of the courtyard now houses a spacious new primary bathroom. With a deep soaking tub, private water closet, stunning shower, and a beautifully designed double vanity, this suite elevates the entire home.
Walk through this Northern California residence today, and you might assume it was recently updated, but you’d never guess the floor plan had once been anything different. At Usher Building and Design, we take the time to understand the true objective of every project, and we have the experience to make transformative changes feel as though they were always meant to be.
We specialize in a wide variety of home addition and remodeling projects throughout El Dorado Hills and beyond. Whether you’re located in the newer communities like Serrano/ Blackstone or the older neighborhoods like Governors Village, Fairchild, Ridgeview, Lakehills, or Summit/Waterford, we’re here to help manage your dream home addition, remodel, or renovation.
